California Exorcism is a series of mixed-media tactile and fiber works documenting a period of resurrection and revival after grief. It is a collection of memories, experiences, conversations, and psychic revelations after a period of living in Los Angeles. Grappling with the spiritual mystery of the city, these works blend fiber and memory as a therapeutic lens to welcome the soul back into the body after a fragment of intense grief and pain. Using expressive stitchwork and a meditative practice, I am narrating the process of ‘rebuilding’ the internal self two years after the sudden death of my romantic partner. My time in Los Angeles was not a phase of healing and acceptance but rather an unexpected upheaval- it was a rupture of my internal self and a memorial to who I was before grief. This project is an ode to the cyclical nature of grief, life, and rebirth.
